The Journey towards Autonomy
The St. Thomas Christians
who remained in union with the
Catholic Church came to be
known as Syro-Malabar Church.
Even while remaining in
communion with Rome, the Syro-Malabar
Catholics were never
comfortable with the Latin
regime. They wanted to have
their own priests as their
bishops. However they remained
under the Latin regime from
1600 to 1896.
Restoration of the
heritage
The dream of our fathers was
moving towards realization in
1896 when three Apostolic
Vicariates were established in
Trichur, Ernakulam and
Chenganacherry. Three Syro-
Malabar priests were made
bishops of these vicariates,
namely, Bishops John
Menacherry (Trichur), Louis
Pazheparambil (Ernakulam)and
Mathew Makil (Chenganacherry).
