In the 1960’s Keralites
started migrating to the
industrial town of Faridabad
in search of their future.
Faridabad, a remote town grown
slowly along the industrial
establishments had gone to its
extreme in 1970’s. The
majority of Keralite migrants
occupied Faridabad measured
almost to 50% Christians, of
which a good portion was Syro-Malabar
Catholics.Faridabad is the
first Syro Malabar Mission
Centre in the Archdiocese of
Delhi.Keeping in mind the
spiritual upliftment and the
tradition of Syro-Malabar
Catholics, Archbishop Mar
Antony Padiyara made a visit
to Faridabad in 1978. In the
year 1986, Fr. Sebastian
Kizhakeyil, the first Syro-Malabar
Priest with the intention of
looking after the Syro-Malabar
community in this industrial
town began staying at Santhom
Bhavan in Sector 23 and
started ministry among the
people.
In 1987, Fr. James Mandapam
succeeded Fr. Sebastian
Kizhakeyil. He worked hard day
and night to identify the Syro-Malabar
Catholics and created
awareness among them to
preserve their tradition
wherever they may be. To work
more closely with Syro-Malabar
families, the Santhom Bhavan
was shifted to Sector 19. The
center was blessed by the late
Archbishop Alen de Lastic in
1990 and declared it a mass
center for this area. Till
then, the Sunday mass and
other celebrations were being
conducted at different
residences and public parks.
In 1993, Congregation of
Mother of Carmal(CMC) sisters
established their first
Convent in Sector-16A and
subsequently started a school
named St. Peter’s Convent
School. It was a relief to
this community in regard to a
place of worship.
Rev.Fr. Jose Oliakattil
succeeded Fr. James Mandapam
in the year 1994 and in 1995,
Rev.Fr. Benny Parecattil took
charge of this mission. Fr.
Paul Madassery followed him in
1997. In the year1997, the community
got a new life as regular
Sunday masses and other
celebrations were shifted to St.Peter’s School. After
four years or service,Rev. Fr. Paul
Madassery went back to Kerala in 2001
Fr. Baiju Vadukkumchery was
appointed in charge of the
community.
On 14th May, 2003, Archbishop
Vincent M. Concessao announced
6 Personal Parishes for the
Oriental Catholics in the
Archdiocese of Delhi and
Faridabad was one of them and
known today as Kristuraja
Parish. Fr. Paul Madassery was
called back to take up the
charge of the community as
Parish Priest and the
inauguration of the new Parish
and the installation took
place during the Holy Qurbana
by His Grace Archbishop
Vincent Concessao on 28th July,
2003, at St. Peter’s School.
The continuous efforts of the
Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Paul
and the sisters of both the
convents support this Parish
to grow very fast. The first
Holy Communion is administered
to the children every year and
annual retreat being conducted
during the Holy Week.
