History

The Syro-Malabar community in Gurgaon was organized by Fr. Sebastian Vadakumpadan in 1992. He used to go with Rev. Sisters from Delhi to celebrate liturgy in Syro-Malabar rite on first and fourth Sundays at 10.00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima School, DLF Colony. It was hard to organize the community due to the irregularity of Sunday services, distance from Delhi and lack of a big community. By the end of 1992 it was shifted to St. Michael’s Church and gradually mass began to be celebrated on every Sunday. Though a number of priests used to come and celebrate mass in turn, most of the time it was Fr. Sebastian who came to celebrate mass. During this period Fr. Joseph Plachickal also served the community for many years.

By 1995 more people began attending the Syro-Malabar liturgy and the community got more organized. Under the leadership of Fr. Justin Puthussery, who was appointed in charge of the mass centre in 1998, the activities got a new momentum. He visited all the houses. A church committee was organized. A choir team was formed and trained. Financial expenditures were met by collections from the people for each function. In 1999 the community first celebrated the feast of St. Thomas with all solemnities and it continues every year.

Fr. Benny Maranparambil took charge of the mass centre in 2001. From the year 2001 onwards, the community used to organize annual retreats. In 2002 Fr. Jose Bharanikulangara was appointed in charge of the centre. As per the request of the people he stayed at Gurgaon during his short period. The people were grouped into 4 areas for family units and prayer gatherings. Fr. Baiju Edassery succeeded Fr. Jose. He continued staying in Gurgaon for some time. He organized catechism classes for the children.

The members participated in all the common functions of the SM community at Delhi like Santhome Fest, Convention, Central Committee. In view of fund collection, the community organized lotteries in two consecutive years at St. Thomas feast.

The inauguration of Santhome Working Men’s Hostel at Rajiv Nagar in April 2004 was a brave new step in the growth of the community. This was intended to give relief and easy accommodation to the youth coming to Gurgaon in search of job opportunities. Fr. Joseph Odanat took over from Fr. Edassery on March 28, 2004 as in charge of the mass centre. During this period the faithful could buy a plot for church in Palam Vihar. In 2005 June Gurgaon Mass centre area was spread to the whole Gurgaon and it was divided into two. Thus Sacred Heart autonomous Mass Centre was erected on 15th June 2005 along with the St.Claret personal parish.Fr.John Chozhithara took charge of the new mass centre for a short period. Fr. Rajan Punnackal succeeded him and took charge of the Mass Centre on 15th September 2005.

On 1st January 2006, a new centre for the non-formal education for the street children was opened in association with St. Joseph's Service Society and Gurgaon as the central office of the Balasneha Street Education project which runs other four centers in Delhi.

C.S.C sisters opened their new convent in the Sacred Heart autonomous mass center, for the pastoral care of the faithful of the same, on 26th May 2006.  Fr. Jose Edassery blessed the new convent in a rented house in Rajive Nagar.  Later they were shifted to Santhome Bhavan and they took charge of the daily administration of the hostel.

23rd July 2006 was a memorable day for  Sacred Heart mass centre Gurgaon, on this day it erected as a Syro-malabar parish and Fr. Rajan Punnackal was installed as the first parish priest.

Santhome Bhavan: It was inaugurated on 2nd July 2006 by Rev. Fr. Jose Edassery, co-ordinatior of Delhi Syro-Malabar Mission. It's a home for the working women in Gurgaon to provide food and accommodation in  reasonable rate. Religious sisters reside in and look after the administration of the hostel.  A play school is also running attached to the hostel.  This  service has become significant in Gurgon where hostel facility for working woman is rare.

On 1st January 2007 St. Joseph's Vocational Trainning centre for the young school drop outs of the locality was opened in the parish. It is meant to give A/c and Refrigeration mechanical training for the trainees.
The new parish purchased a land in Rajiv Nagar for constructing the new new church. It was a genuine effort of the community by means of certain financial projects.
A new Mass Centre was started towards the end of 2006 in sector 46 and the new catechism school was inaugurated by Archbishop Vincent M Concessavo on 12th August 2007.
