History

Palam (Mahavir Enclave) Syro-Malabar Community belongs to the Infant Jesus Parish, one of the Personal Parishes of Syro-Malabar Community in the Archdiocese of Delhi. It was formally erected on July 1, 2003. This parish comprises of the Mass Centers at Mahavir Enclave, Dwarka and Janakpuri. All the three Mass Centers have regular Masses in Syro-Malabar rite at different timings. Sunday Catechism Classes are functional at all theses mass centers. Monthly prayer meetings are organized in all the family units of all Mass Centers without fail.

The history of Mahavir Enclave Mass Center goes back to 1994 when, with just 9 families, Fr. Sebastian Vadakumpadan started offering Holy Mass in the Syro-Malabar Rite. Sunday Mass and other religious functions were offered from the chapel of St. Paul Provincial House (FCC) in Raj Nagar, Palam Colony. The FCC Sisters were very helpful and were ready to help the Syro-Malabar community to any extend. As soon as regular Sunday Mass started in Palam, Syro-Malaber families who hitherto used to go to different places for Masses started joining it and eventually graduated into a large community.

Infant Jesus Parish had it’s first Church at Mahavir Enclave (also the first ever Syro-Malabar church in Delhi) blessed on August 01, 2004, within thirteen months of the parish coming in to existence. This was possible only when the vision of the clergy matured in union with the hard work and prayer of the parishioners.

The contributions made by Fr. Sebastian Vadakumpadan is memorable, who was instrumental in procuring the land required for the church, and for giving guidance and confidence to Fr. Justin Puthussery to take up the task of building the church. Fr. Justin Puthussery had completed the presbytery and took initiative and first steps for the construction of the Church. By this time he was transferred to Kerala.

Fr. Shajan Puthenpura who came in as the first Parish Priest took up the challenge to build the church with limited resources. He motivated and guided the parishioners with dedication and determination to bring the dream of first ever Syro-Malabar Church in Delhi into reality. On 3 November 2007, Fr. Martin Palamattam took charge of the parish. On 7th August 2010, Fr Varghese Palatty was appointed as parish Priest of the Parish.

Fr Paul Parecattil took charge as parish Priest on 4th September 2010. He carried out the mission started by the former parish priests successfully. He started Holy Childhood for the children and tried at his best to unify the community in Infant Jesus.
