CHAPTER: 5
GOD’S SPIRIT AND WORD IN THE ITME OF THE PROMISES

  1. Which are the people in the Old Testament through whom the Holy Spirit worked?

The prophets, the kings, the psalmists, the writers of different books, the wise men, and sages are the people of the Old Testament in whom the Holy Spirit worked in order to reveal the will of God.

  2. Which are the four functions of the Holy Spirit with regard to the Creation?

It belongs to the Holy Spirit to rule, sanctify, preserve and animate creation, for he is God, one with the father and the Son. He preserves creation in the Father through the Son.

  3. How did the Israelites expect the Spirit to work among them?

“Behold, I am doing a new thing”¸(Is 43:19). Two prophetic lines were to develop, one leading to the expectation of the Messiah, the other pointing to the announcement of a new Spirit. They await in hope the “consolation of Israel” and “the redemption of Jerusalem,” which is the Spirit itself. (Zeph; 2:3; Lk; 2:25, 38)

  4. What does Isaiah 11:1-2 speak of the role of the Spirit in the promised Messiah?

“There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD”.

  5. According to Lk; 4:18-19, what is the role of the Spirit in the life of Jesus?

“The Spirit of the LORD God is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up their broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor.”

  6. What will Spirit of God do at the end of times

According to the promises, at the “end time” the Lord’s Spirit will renew the hearts of men, engraving a new law in them. He will gather and reconcile the scattered and divided peoples; he will transform the first creation, and God will dwell there with men in peace.

  7. How does the Holy Spirit affect the human heart?

The Holy Spirit purifies the heart and the Spirit is making ready “a people prepared for the Lord.”
